Safety Management Systems

Organisations that are successful are increasingly realising the benefits of an integrated approach to health and safety management. They recognise that the early identification of risk and its control helps to maintain the general health of employees and the success of the business.
Health and safety management systems should include all areas of your business, as measuring performance means that performance is measured against agreed standards to reveal when and where improvement is needed.
The Health & Safety Executive’s (HSE’s) publication ‘Successful Health and Safety Management’ (HSG65) provides one of many models used to manage health and safety issues within an organisation. The message it conveys is a simple one: “Organisations need to manage health and safety with the same degree of expertise and to the same standards as other core business activities, if they are effectively to control risks and prevent harm to people”.
HSG 65 is based on a ‘plan, do, check, and act’ approach. The planning process means that there is a systematic approach to implementing the health and safety policy through an effective health and safety management system.
